Does Eating Extra Protein Help In Muscle Building

We often see boys and girls with fantastic muscular bodies in gyms, crowding together and partying on different jazzy packed protein powders. At some point or the other we sure must have wondered whether eating extra protein will really help in muscle building or not.

In this regards, we happened to talk to Shubi Husain, the award winning, celebrity nutritionist and business woman. We asked her opinion on whether consuming extra protein helps in muscle building? She opined saying, “Eating extra protein actually doesn’t do much towards boosting your muscle mass and strength. Infact medical research shows that consuming too much protein i.e. more than 30% of your daily intake could actually harm your body.”

She went on to say, “Protein solely is not the driving factor in building muscles but it requires carbohydrates for energy during workouts and healthy fats to help optimize hormone levels like testosterone growth for improved muscle repair and growth.”

So we asked Shubi, if it was indeed a myth, she said in the affirmative and went on to say, “If you believe in the myth that eating extra protein will add muscle mass then you are going for a toss and accumulating fat in your body. Anything extra that the body consumes above its requirement, gets stored. That’s why most people fail to meet their objective of a strong muscular body.”


Muscle growth requires a combination of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. When your body have adequate amounts of carbohydrates and fats to burn during your workout, it spares protein. Without sufficient carbohydrates and fats your body will use protein stores for energy thereby stalling any muscle building.
